Peddle Thorp & Montgomery Ltd were commissioned in the early 1990s to assist the Rotongaio Trust land owners in a development plan for the Lake Rotongaio Resort site near Waitaihanui, Taupo.
The site was previously known as the famous Loafers Paradise Camping Ground and was the subject of a Hotel Development proposal in the late 1980s that did not proceed.
PTM investigated with the Rotongaio Trust the key development issues for the site including the constraints. Planning zoning approval for a tourist resort was achieved in 1994 with the Taupo District Council by PTM.
Subsequent hotel resort concepts did not progress past the preliminary design stage.
The site is a world class resort with a 100 acre development site on the edge of Lake Taupo facing North, but also overlooking Lake Rotongaio, a large natural lake sitting marginally inland from Lake Taupo but connected to it via a small stream. A reservation reserve is located around the lake reaching up into the forested hills and down to the white cliffs. The site has thermal water and a special micro climate protecting it from the cool southerly winds coming off the mountains and lake.
The site is magnificently private and could support an international golf course on the hill tops above if land owners' approval could be obtained.
In 2001, Peddle Thorp & Montgomery was commissioned by a private developer to undertake concept plans for an international health resort of some 100 rooms, plus guest facilities. The resort was supported by the Rotongaio Trust but full landowners' approval to a lease of the site was not forthcoming, so the project did not proceed.
The site is highly regarded as probably the best potential hotel resort site on Lake Taupo.
