Project Size: 42 000m²
Project Value: NZ$110 Million
Location: Wellington, New Zealand
Practice: Peddle Thorp & Montgomery
The development central Post Office site stood as an empty lot for ten years in the 1980's, after the Government abandoned plans for a central Post Office building. Tourism interests convinced the local government that the site should be developed into an international hotel for the Capital City.
The landmark building by Peddle Thorp & Montgomery features a 232 room 'four star' hotel which is now run by the InterContinental Group. It also houses twelve floors of quality office space of some 10,000m². The project has a floor area of 42,000m², cost $90 million to build and won the Wellington Owner's Building & Managers Award in the early 1990's.
The building is a warmly regarded landmark in the central city with the InterContinental still regarded as the premier hotel in Wellington.
