The Arts Block project was the second of a 3 stage redevelopment Peddle Thorp and Montgomery undertook
at Hutt Valley High School.
The building comprises 3 Art studios and 3 classrooms, photography suite, computer suite, project
room, dark room with developing studio, staff offices and storage spread over 2 floors. The main
entry and circulation areas are designed to provide exhibition areas and includes a purpose designed
artwork in the entry lobby stairwell.
The new Arts Block building is constructed of concrete tilt up slab and concrete floors for improved
durability and acoustics. The building is generally naturally ventilated with clerestory lighting to
upper central zones, and solar shading elements comprising part of its environmentally sustainable
design features.
