Project Size: 10,500m²
Project Value: NZ$30 Million approx.
Location: Taupo, New Zealand
PTM were recently commissioned as part of the Taupo District Councils commercial and industrial structure plan study to prepare preliminary concepts for a Civic Heart precinct located next to the Civic Great Lake centre in Taupo.
The concept shown is for a new Cultural Arts Heritage facility located on the third floor, new TDC administration offices on level 2 and a pavilion and multi purpose function space at ground level. This ground level facility will provide flexible functional spaces that can be associated with the Great Lake Centre and also the Taupo Domain public space for event days of major public congregations and casual community group use. This would also include the cultural heritage centre facility workshops and shops for the display and retailing of community art.
The building features a central gallery foyer atrium of 3 levels which will act as a major meeting point for Taupo people and visitors, and will be a cultural focus. The form of the building is rectangular but it features a floating feather shaped roof suspended from both ends of the building and with a break in the middle to view the distance Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo.
The Taupo Civic Heart centre features a community pavilion space on the ground floor and space café and art shops displaying community art produced in the centre workshops.
The planning allows the building to integrate with the existing Great lake centre and provides for improved food and beverage servicing, a new central kitchen and a new function hall to provide additional marketing facilities for Taupo events.
Servicing of the new building is done from the rear of the Great lake centre adjacent to the existing services functions. The new building comprises a floor area of some 10,500m² and is estimated to cost $30 Million.
